Miniature Globe: The Earth and its inhabitants

19th century pocket globe in box with folding hand-colored engraving.

Set comprises a cardboard box, covered with brown marbled paper, 6cm x 5cm x 5cm, with title vignette supported by four peoples of the world. A miniature globe of the world rests loosely in the box. 
A 28 concertina hand-coloured panorama panel, attached to the inside base of the box, each illustrating a person of a different nationality in national dress, with titles in English and German language.  
Part of the Children's Literature Research Collection. 

An item such as this 'pocket globe' would have been acquired as an educational toy for students, to be used in a family setting as a parlor game, with the intention of teaching relative cartography on a sphere. The fold-out engraving illustrates the diversity of peoples of the world and their traditional dress. Many versions of such globes are attributed to Johann Bernard Bauer (1752-1839) and sons Carl Johann Sigmund Bauer and Peter, the family of German globe-makers who created products for English and Continental markets.
