John Langdon Bonython (1848-1939) was born in London and was an editor, newspaper proprietor, philanthropist, Australian politician and journalist in South Australia. He retired from newspapers after 65 years service. He was one of seven members elected to the Australian House of Representatives in the 1901 election. At that time South Australia was a single electorate with numerous members. He and his wife Marie Louise Frederica Balthasar had eight children and still found time to donate and support many causes in South Australia and Cornwall. He left a legacy of over 4 million pounds.
