Hoeper's stables [architectural drawing]

This architectural drawing of the stables for Mr Hoeper of Glenelg is by English and Soward Architects, Grenfell Street, Adelaide. HT Hoeper and Company were storekeepers at Scarborough Street, New Glenelg - now Somerton Park, later moving to an adjacent corner at Bath and Partridge Streets.

The family business was established in 1878 and later expanded to include a wood yard. They also operated a post office from the store. The family remained at Bath Street until 1984 when the businees was sold.

Jackman Gooden, later Jackman Parken Evans and now JPE, is one of the oldest architectural firms in South Australia, with its origins in the practices of Daniel Garlick (1818-1902) and Thomas English (1819-1884). Thomas English had established his architectural and building practice with Henry Brown in 1850, in 1865 becoming solely architects. George Soward became a partner in 1882, and Thomas' son continued the practice after his father's death. Soward withdrew from the partnership but his name continued in use. The firm continued until 1936 when it combined with the practice established in 1851 by Daniel Garlick.

Herbert Jackman was apprenticed to Garlick, later becoming his partner. His son, Herbert M. Jackman entered into the English and Soward partnership. Herbert M. Jackman later merged the two companies which became Garlick and Jackman. Lancelot Gooden joined the firm becoming a senior partner in 1945. The company has continued to evolve and expand and now operates as JPE.

The State Library acquired its collection of Jackman Gooden architectural drawings in 1993 with the assistance of the Friends of the State Library and the Somerville Bequest.
