Adelaide and its architecture

This bird's-eye view of Adelaide was published some time before 1876 as the windmill on West Terrace to the right of centre was destroyed by fire in that year. The view is only a partial view of the city, not the expansive one published in 1887 by the Frearson Brothers. None of North Adelaide appears in this view. When today we refer to Adelaide, we generally mean the city bounded by the terraces, North, South, West and East. For much of the 19th century this was called South Adelaide, to distinguish it from that portion of Adelaide north of the River Torrens.

The Lunatic Asylum at top was on the corner of Botanic and Hackney Roads: Yarrabee House is all that remains of it. City or Adelaide Bridge in the foreground of the central bird's-eye view was built in 1877, replaced in the 1930s by another bridge. The river curls away hidden by trees as the Torrens weir had not yet been built, creating the lake. The Post Office, Railway Station and some of the churches have been demolished and rebuilt or relocated. Parliament House is now Old Parliament House, with the new building constructed during the 1880s, and finally completed in 1936.
