Opening drawers in the memory of a migrant community: Oral histories of Italian market gardener families in Adelaide between the wars [sound recording]/ speaker, Madeleine Regan.
Presentation by Madeleine Regan, coordinator and interviewer, about the Italian market gardeners oral history project. In the presentation Madeleine examines the use of oral history interviews to analyse change, continuity and ongoing transnational connections through a microhistory of three generations of a migrant community from the 1920s to the present. She also explores the use of 60 oral history interviews in the research for her PhD studies. In particular she focuses on different categories of oral histories in the collection and includes seven sound clips from the interviews: 1. Two elderly men who had arrived in Adelaide as children from Fascist Italy in the 1930s 2. Family story of a proxy marriage and work in the market garden 3. Family story of a marriage between an Irish Australian woman and a man from the Veneto region which was controversial because of racism towards Italians in the 1930s 4. Family stories that are not told in the interview but are revealed at a later time 5. Family story that demonstrates the strong links between families in Adelaide and in the Veneto region. Madeleine also discusses the role of her website in preserving memories of the Veneto market gardener families. There is a Q and A section at the end of the presentation.
