Thelma Williams, nee Johnson, was born in Perth to South Australian parents; her maternal grandfather was a timber mill foreman and Thelma's father had followed his intended West. Thelma grew up in Hindmarsh amongst generations of her parents' prolific, close-knit, Methodist families. Her father was a traveller for his family's Kangaroo Soap Company. Thelma attended Adelaide High School with the aim to do office work, and help support the family. She worked for ten years at the Master Butchers' Association in Light Square until her marriage to a local boy in 1933. Mrs Williams had four children
