Sent ashore to find fresh meat and water in 1803, one of the crew of Nicolas Baudin's expedition carved the following inscription on a rock face near present-day Hog Bay, on the north coast of Kangaroo Island: 'Expedition de decourverte par le commandant Baudin sur le Geographe 1803.' (Expedition of discovery by Captain Baudin of the Geographe 1803.)
Hallam Tennyson, son of the famous poet, visited the spot with his family one hundred years later during his term as governor of South Australia. At the time the state was celeberating the centenary of the meeting of Baudin and Flinders at Encounter Bay. The photograph taken by a Register newspaper commissioned photographer is from the Searcy Collection.
