DescriptionA recording of a farewell message to Australia by Hallam Lord Tennyson recorded at the request of the Board of Governors of the Public Library of South Australia (the former name of the State Library) on the eve of Tennyson's return to England. Tennyson was Governor of South Australia from 1899-1902 and the second Governor-General of Australia, 1903-04.
The Board tried to arrange voice recordings of other public figures associated with Australia's Federation but none were willing or able to cooperate with this visionary proposal.
Recorded on a wax cylinder, the original is held at State Records of South Australia GRG 26/2/13. The digital copy was produced by the State Library of South Australia.
History/biographyHallam Tennyson (1852-1928) was born on 11 August 1852 at Twickenham in England. He was the eldest son of the poet laureate Alfred, Lord Tennyson.
