Melva Guyatt enlisted in the army and served as a nurse in Bougainville during World War II. Her husband, Len, served in the Royal Navy during and after the War. Melva learned of the soldier settlement scheme in the Riverland on her return to South Australia and she and Len applied for the scheme, seeking a quiet life in the country as Len had been badly affected by his experiences in the War.
