The message reads, "Dear Smith, I am intensely grieved to get the news of the fatal accident that has overtaken your brother, and I hasten to express on behalf of all ranks of the Royal Air Force our deep sorrow. May I say on my own behalf that I am inexpressibly grieved, and that you have my great sympathy with you in the loss of your brilliant brother."
