David Waite, son of pastoralist Peter Waite, with a "party of motorists" discovered Clara Serena singing at her Aunt’s house, while they were attending the Onkaparinga races (later Oakbank races).  He arranged for her to come to Adelaide, where she won a scholarship at the Elder Conservatorium, studying with Miss Guli Hack.
