Interview with Bruna Rossetto (nee Battaglia) [sound recording] / Interviewer : Madeleine Regan, Part 1 of 2
Bruna Rosetto (nee Battaglia) was born on 4 June 1925 in Caselle D'Altivole, in the Province of Treviso in the Veneto Region and she begins by talking about her family background; the reason for her father emigrating to Australia in 1926; her arrival in Australia in January 1939 at 13 yars old with her mother and two sisters; and working for Brazzale mica factory in the West End of the City of Adelaide with other women mostly from the Veneto. She recalls early years in Adelaide: her mother knew some other families from the same village who lived in Adelaide eg Tonellato and Santin families; she made friends with other Veneta young women; visits to Lockleys [market gardens] to see other Veneti families; the train carriage that the Tonellato family lived in; market gardens and the hard work involved; her husband helped his brother in the market garden near the River Torrens; the birth of her first child; Sunday visits to the market gardeners such as the Berno's and Santin's; social gatherings in the Lockleys area; description of the Frogmore/River Road area and the range of vegetables the market gardeners grew. Other areas covered include: memories of meeting her husband, Beppi, when she was 16 years of age and getting married in 1942 at 17 years (Beppi was 30) against her father's wishes; the positive influence of a priest who supported the marriage; description of the wedding without her family attending; the guests; purchase of her wedding outfit with coupons with her sister-in-law; the kindness of the Rossetto relatives; the market gardens where her husband worked with his brother, Gelindo, on River Road, Lockleys; birth of three children; description of places where she lived with her family in the City of Adelaide; her husband working in the Spotted Tiger mica mine; and the decision to move to the mine with the younger children in 1950; description of life in the mining camp, cooking for 12 men and looking after the children (four years and one year); returning to Adelaide for surgery; continuing to work at Brazzale mica factory; Beppi's work as a marble polisher; buying a house in Klemzig; her work for 36 years in the Wallis Theatres; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; importance of her Italian heritage; her husband's death in 1992.
