Interview with Giovanni (Johnny) Tormena for the Italian Market Gardeners Oral History Project. Johnny Tormena Arrived from Italy with his parents and younger sister in Australia in 1940. He describes his memories of his first 12 years in Bigolino in the Province of Treviso in the Region of the Veneto in northern Italy. Themes include: his parents' families; poverty; school; his mother's family (the Rossettos); their opposition to fascism and her eight siblings who emigrated to Australia; his experience of the compulsory membership of the Fascist youth movement and different levels; the circumstances of his parents' decision to emigrate to Australia in 1939; the farewell from the village; and the boat trip.
