Letter written in 1914 from a group of letters written from Leipzig, Germany, during World War I, by Caroline Ethel Cooper (1871-1961) to her sister Mrs Emmie Bevan Carr, in Adelaide. Ethel Cooper, a musician, was a regular visitor to Germany before WWI and was allowed to stay on in Leipzig during the War. Her home was often raided by the police and she was forbidden from leaving Germany several times.

The letters were numbered and kept by Miss Cooper until after the war, with the exception of the first bundle which was smuggled from Germany to Switzerland in 1915 by a friend, and posted to her sister.

Ethel returned to Adelaide for a few years after the War but went back to Europe, to undertake relief work in Poland and Greece, before settling in Adelaide with her now-widowed sister in 1936.
