David Gregg was born in the Lakes District in England. He studied dairy technology and worked as a research assistant in farming for 10 years. In 1970 he joined a farming partnership and moved to Busselton in Western Australia. The farm was beef cattle and large scale vegetable plantings. This was sold after 2 years. In 1973 he worked as manager/winemaker for Tom Cullity at Vasse Felix which came into full production in 1977. The winery was sold to Robert Holmes a Court in the 1980s and David stayed for five years
